Dog Care Technician

All Kind is a non-profit organization that seeks to improve animal welfare in the city of Abilene by building a new animal shelter facility, decreasing homeless pet overpopulation through accessible spay/neuter programs, increasing pet retention through expanded foster programming and adoption events, and offering greater education and resources through community outreach.

Location: Abilene Animal Shelter, 925 S. 25th St.

Compensation: Full-time and Part-time positions available $17/hr

GENERAL DESCRIPTION AND EXPERIENCE

To perform a variety of duties involved in the constant cleanliness of kennels, runs, and shelter areas to include feeding, watering, and handling of dogs at the shelter. The kennel team provides our dogs with love, compassion, daily exercise and enrichment.

Previous experience in working with dogs such as holding, walking, loading, and unloading from cages and/or vehicles is preferred.

Previous experience in dietary and vaccination requirements of companion animals is a plus.

Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.

A passion for animal welfare.

Certification as a Euthanasia Technician for the State of Texas is required within 6 months of employment.


This position exercises no supervision over staff. 


A high school diploma or a GED is required.


A valid Texas driver’s license is required.


**Most kennel techs will be asked to specialize in Cat Care or Dog Care but will need to be able to provide care to either.


IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Thoroughly clean and disinfect/sanitize all areas of the shelter according to our standard operating procedures.  Ensure that dogs are clean.  

Responsible for daily feeding and monitoring eating habits of all dogs in our care.

Observe dog appearance and activity for general physical condition, obvious signs of illness, disease and discontent.

Report signs of illness, disease, injury or unusual activity to vet technicians and supervisors. 

Utilize dog handling skills to provide a safe and friendly environment for the dogs.

Perform necessary cleaning, minor repairs, and maintenance of all equipment, tools, and shelter facilities.

Ensure that dogs are properly identified and housed.

Administer vaccines, insert microchips and perform minor testing such as heartworm test. 

Input data into PetPoint (software management system) as well as digital images of dogs for posting on social media platforms. 

Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and multi-task.

Provide excellent customer service for citizens in person and over the telephone.

Wash and dry towels and blankets. Wash and sterilize water and food bowls.

Sweep, mop floors, dust, and clean work areas; collect and remove waste; wash windows, empty the trash, and clean restrooms.  

Patrol the shelter grounds daily, removing trash and/or stool material.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of:

Controlling/handling individual animal temperament to gain animal confidence and trust when restraining them for transport, grooming, and/or treatment.

General knowledge of animal health and welfare with the ability to learn about common diseases, their symptoms, and means of transmission.

Materials, methods, and practices used in cleaning operations.

Domestic animal behaviors.

Computer data entry operations.

Skill to:

Operate a variety of animal equipment and tools including control pole, lead rope, portable cage, euthanasia materials, and cleaning apparatus.

Listen, evaluate and understand the needs of customers when matching adoptable animals with the customer.

Provide professional customer service.

Operate office equipment, including computer equipment.


Ability to:

Restrain dogs for procedures performed by the technicians or veterinarian.

Administer oral medications.

Perform data entry into the computer database and to query the database for information.

Learn occupational hazards and standard safety precautions in handling animals.

Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.

Prepare and maintain routine records.

Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work, both internally and externally.


Essential duties require the following physical skills and work environment: 

With or without accommodation, ability to lift up to 50 pounds and team lift up to 100 pounds. 

Withstand exposure to animal noise, unpleasant odors, cold, heat, outdoors, vibration and chemicals.

Ability to maneuver and walk on wet floor surfaces.

Essential duties require the following physical skills and work environment: 

Ability to work closely with all types of domestic animals. Exposure to bites, scratches, and animal wastes.

May be required to use strength and/or agility in capturing and restraining stronger, more active dogs.

Walking and/or standing for extended periods of time. Ability to work in a bent over or squatting position.
